The Milanese building in via Berchet was built in 1880 by the Opera Pia Borella…
This initiative, organized in Italy by Lombardy, is just the first of a series of business incubators for sustainable companies. Paolo Pipere, in charge for all the environment issues at the Milan Chamber of Commerce, affirmed: «In a year, in Lombardy, green enterprises have grown 6% and are over 9,000. In the last 5 years, this sector has recorded an increase of more than 64%. Most of them are in Milan (3,695), Brescia (1,212), and Bergamo (1,034). Among the Lombard provinces, Lecco is the one where the green sector is expanding most (+14%), followed by Bergamo and Monza (+8%).
This branch is also producing employment. In Italy 48,000 enterprises are sustainability-oriented, employing over 470,000 operators,
which are mainly concentrated in Lombardy (79,000 employees, i.e. one fifth of whole Italy), and particularly in Milan (35,000) ». Such view emerges from a study conducted by the Milan Chamber of Commerce and by Unioncamere Lombardia. Claudia Maria Terzi, Environment, Energy and Sustainable Development Councillor of Regione Lombardia, asserted: «Innovation and cooperation are at the basis of all the European Union actions until 2020. Regione Lombardia has allocated 235 million euros in favour of initiatives for Smart Cities, broadband development, energy efficiency, and electric mobility, with the aim of sustaining Lombard enterprises». Gian Domenico Auricchio, Chairman of Unioncamere Lombardia, underlined: «In the Lombard context, the importance of the environmental friendly branch is extremely relevant. It is the field where, today, competitiveness and the research for innovative capability – favoured by Lombardy Chambers of Commerce by sharing their competences and expertise – are played». Excellent examples can be found in the construction industry, where a new way of building is developing, together with a greater attention for nature and energy efficiency. The Green knowhow community initiative is promoting new activities oriented towards sustainable development, so to attract foreign companies and professionals in the Milan area (www.csr.unioncamere.it).
