The new vintage of La Raia biodynamic Gavi Riserva is ready. Daniele Sala reviews it.
Dear friends of La Raia,
while we are harvesting we received the terrific news that Gambero Rosso had granted the Tre Bicchieri award on the Gavi DOCG Riserva La Raia 2016.OCG Riserva La Raia 2016.
This wine comes exclusively from the 3-hectare Madonnina vineyard, that runs along the entrance of La Raia. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, as all of the La Raia vineyards. It’s one of the oldest in the property and is acknowledged as one of the most beautiful and spectacular vineyards in all of Southern Piedmont.
The first edition of our Gavi DOCG Riserva dates back to 2010 and it is still one of the very few Gavi Riserva wines produced in the Gavi appellation.
Thanks to its location, exposure and soil type the Cortese grapes in the Madonnina vineyard can express themselves at their best keeping their unique characteristics. The bunches are periodically checked from mid-August, in order to precisely plan the harvest time and obtain a healthy and slightly raisined product. Once the alcoholic and malolactic fermentation is over, the wine rests on the yeasts for about one year and is periodically stirred (bâtonnage); it is then bottled and after 6 more months it is released on the market.
With this wine we aim for a veracious Gavi: an intense ripe fruit aroma, a rich and harmonic mouth feel and a honey finish. It acquires a mineral touch and a rich saltiness in time.
We hope that the Friends of La Raia will be happy to taste the 2016 vintage. We will surely be happy to share with you the success of a wine that we love, on which we invested a lot and that proves once more that our respect for the land results in very high quality products.
