The green mansion in the Gavi hills
Locanda La Raia is a big green house surrounded by vineyards, grazing land and woods that belong to the biodynamic, organic farm La Raia. Once a place where wayfarers could rest and get some food, Locanda offers a new idea of hospitality made of simplicity and relaxed pace, with discreet and dedicated service, all in a sophisticated space marked by the interaction with the beauty of the surrounding nature.
The renovation of Locanda La Raia and of its green areas bears the signature of deamicisarchitetti studio, which has enhanced the most peculiar features of this place and its relation with the environment. The twelve rooms at Locanda, all different from one another, are furnished with antique pieces of the Piedmont tradition and e Italian design icons, carefully chosen to reflect the taste of the owners. On the walls, ancient family paintings are paired with contemporary artwork, selected among the artists represented by the Milanese gallery Viasaterna.
An Italian-style herbs garden welcomes the guests, while another wide garden develops towards the vineyards following a concept by the French team Coloco, students and collaborators of the landscape designer Gilles Clément. The pool – with an indoor and an outdoor area, is heated to be used all year round; the wellness area, with sauna, Turkish bath and treatment rooms, as well as a fully equipped gym, is designed to enjoy moments of pure relaxation.
In an area dedicated to the pleasure of tasting and shopping, you can find all the biodynamic products of La Raia farm, starting from the Gavi Pisé, a symbol of the company, and the wines from Tenuta Cucco, the estate owned by the Rossi Cairo family in Serralunga d’Alba, among which the Barolo wines, such as the famous Cerrati cru.
At Locanda, food also represents an opportunity to discover the territory: Valeria and Simone, in charge of the kitchen, have translated this philosophy into traditional menus with an authentic home-style feeling. In summer, guests are welcome to sit at the big garden table, in the area around the pool or to have a picnic in one of the shady corners of the Tenuta.

The seed of the pedagogic project
I moved to La Raia in 2003 and, while my husband Tom was converting the land to the biodynamic approach, I started the first initiatives for children which brought to the birth of Intorno al melo, no profit association promoting Steiner pedagogy…

Wake up at La Raia!
Within the biodynamic estate La Raia there are several farmsteads which date back to the XIX century: homes, barns, wide arcades and old tanks witness an authentic agricultural world which we have fully recovered with our project of biodynamic farming.

Tenuta Cucco in Serralunga d’Alba, at the roots of the renowned XIV century castle that dominates the whole Langhe albesi area. The name recalls its altitude, “cucco” in local dialect, the summit of the hill in which Vigna Cucco, the most ancient vineyard, is located.
Art Culture Territory
On June the 22nd 2013 the Fondazione La Raia – arte cultura territorio was born, wanted by Giorgio Rossi Cairo and managed by his wife Irene Crocco, art dealer. The foundation aims at promoting, on a national scale, critical reflections on the landscape, through contributions from various fields of study.
